Chelsea continued their dominating form with a repeat of midweek’s crushing result against the Trotters. Any doubts that Chelsea’s critics had over their away form were completely abolished with a cutting, deadly efficient and at times resilient performance. Since their surprise loss at Villa, the Blues have scored 13 in three games and conceded none.
This game was a demonstration for the press and for the entire Premier League that Chelsea are not just imperious at home, but are also not going to roll over and crumble away either like they did in the previous two games. For Carlo Ancelotti, the focus of the players was the most important quality needed for the match. “We must keep our concentration and try to play well for 90 minutes, that’s all that matters.”
If the Carling Cup match was a walk in the park, this time the Trotters put up much more of a fight. Throughout the first half, they made life difficult for the visitors putting pressure on the diamond midfield to move the ball around like they did in the home tie on Wednesday. The root one football almost paid diffidence when Johan Elmander blazed over a chance which began with the massive ball from goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskalainen.
Yet the promised threat from set plays never arose and the Blues finally made the breakthrough. Ballack put through a perfect ball through the middle allowing Drogba through on goal. The almost certain goal was denied by Jlloyd Samuel who as the last man was dismissed. It would have been better if he had let Drogba shoot as Mr. Reliability Frank Lampard calmly slotted the ball into the left corner of the net from the penalty.
With only three midfielders left in the Trotter’s midfield after a reshuffle at half time, the Blues had licence to go for the throat. After a brief 10 minute spell of resistance, Deco doubled the advantage with a calm finish past the excellent Finn. The goal deflayted Megson’s battling men and Chelsea slipped into top gear.
Ivanovic was harshly denied a excellent volley in the first half as it was deemed that Anelka and Ballack were interfering with play whilst in an offside position. He was still denied his goal when it appeared he had headed the ball into net on 82 minutes but it was deemed to have been the head of Bolton defender Zat Knight.
The Blues saved the best for last as they scored an absolute peach in the last minutes. A wonderful one touch move started by Deco and including a blind backwards flick by Lampard allowed the magnificent Drogba to calmly slide the ball into the side netting, completing the rout.
